Rum tasting for beginners: 6 simple steps

Good rum does not have to be complicated. Discover six simple steps to look, smell and taste, compare flavours and choose a rum that truly suits you.

Rum tasting starts with the right expectations

Let go of the idea that you need to recognise everything in a single sip. A tasting experience consists of small impressions that sometimes only emerge when you smell or taste a second time. You might notice fruit first, followed by a hint of spice, or simply a warm, rounded impression. All are valid observations.

Do not taste with the aim of declaring one rum objectively the best. The best choice is the bottle that suits your taste, the occasion and how you want to enjoy it. Someone looking for a rum to sip slowly on its own will often choose differently from someone wanting a characterful cocktail base.

A tasting is not about quantity either. Pour small servings, take your time and keep water on the table. This helps you focus on the flavours and compare different rums fairly.

1. Choose a quiet moment and a simple glass

Strong cooking smells, perfume or scented candles can affect your perception. Choose a quiet moment, preferably before a large meal. A neutral setting helps you smell and taste the rum more clearly.

A tulip-shaped tasting glass is useful because it concentrates the aromas, but a small wine glass works well too. Avoid wide, low glasses if you mainly want to explore the aroma, as scents escape more quickly from them. Pour only a small amount. That is more than enough for attentive tasting.

Let the rum rest for a minute after pouring. This gives the aromas a chance to open up. The difference can be particularly noticeable with a rum that has a distinctive character.

2. Look first, but do not jump to conclusions

Hold the glass against a light background and look at the colour and clarity. You may see an almost transparent rum, a golden style or a deeper amber colour. This is interesting, but it never tells the whole story about flavour or quality.

Gently move the glass and watch how the liquid runs down the sides. Some enthusiasts look at the droplets flowing back down, but treat this as a visual impression rather than a scoring system. Your nose and palate are ultimately much more important.

This first step mainly helps you start mindfully. It shifts your attention from drinking to tasting and gives each sense a role.

3. Smell briefly and gently

The nose is often the most revealing part of a rum tasting. However, do not put your nose deep into the glass or breathe in too strongly. The alcohol can dominate, causing you to miss the finer aromas. Hold the glass a little away from you, smell briefly and repeat after a few seconds.

Do not reach for technical terms straight away. Does the rum remind you of ripe fruit, citrus, spices, baking, wood, caramel, or something dry and fresh? Write down three words if it helps. Your own words are more valuable than a list you have read somewhere.

Try smelling with the glass at different heights too. Lighter aromas may stand out just above the rim, while deeper notes can emerge closer to the glass.

4. Take a small first sip

Take a small sip and let the rum move around your mouth for a few seconds. The aim is not to hold it until it feels uncomfortable, but to notice how it develops. Where do you first notice the flavour? Is the initial impression soft, lively, dry, rich or spicy?

Then swallow gently and notice the finish. Does the flavour fade quickly, or does something return after you have swallowed? A longer finish is not automatically better, but it can reveal additional layers.

Does the alcohol feel too prominent? Take a sip of water, wait a moment and try again with an even smaller amount. A little water can open up the aroma of some rums, but add it drop by drop.

5. Compare no more than three rums at a time

Two or three different rums are more than enough for a first tasting. With six glasses in front of you, it becomes difficult to remember the nuances. Choose a clear comparison instead: for example, a lighter, approachable rum alongside a fuller style with more spicy or woody impressions.

Taste from light to intense. Start with the rum that smells freshest or most subtle, and save the most powerful for last. Drink water between tastings and, if you like, have a small piece of plain bread.

Briefly note what stands out in each glass: aroma, flavour, finish and the occasion when you would serve it. Your notes will then be useful the next time you choose a rum.

6. Get to know your taste, not just the bottle

Beginners often ask which rum they should choose. A better question is: what kind of impression are you looking for? If you enjoy soft, rounded flavours, your preference may differ from someone who likes dry, spicy or pronounced woody notes. Your palate develops glass by glass.

Consider the occasion too. Tasting neat calls for a rum you can explore and discuss at leisure. For cocktails, you may instead want a style that retains enough character alongside citrus, sugar or spices.

If you are unsure between a few styles, tell us honestly what you already enjoy, even if it is not rum. At Gin & Wine Store, we help you turn that preference into a suitable first bottle without making the choice overwhelming.

Common mistakes at a first rum tasting

The most common mistake is drinking too quickly. Rum has more room to develop when you take small sips and pause between them. Another mistake is immediately dismissing the aroma as too strong. Move a little further from the glass and smell again, more gently and briefly.

Temperature deserves attention too. Rum served ice-cold generally reveals less aroma and flavour, so aim for room temperature. If you prefer some cooling, a large ice cube is better suited to relaxed enjoyment than ice during a focused tasting.

Finally, do not let what you think you should taste guide you. If you do not recognise vanilla, banana or spices, that is fine. Simply describe the rum as warm, fresh, slightly sweet, dry, full-bodied or elegant.

The next step is simple: choose one rum that makes you curious, pour a small glass and give yourself five attentive minutes. Explore our rum range online or visit us in De Haan for personal advice. Always taste in moderation.
